8- Hour Infection Control Course

This course is designed to meet the standards of the California Dental Board for an unlicensed dental assistant who is required by the State of California to take an 8-hour course in Infection Control within 120 days of employment in a dental office.  (provider number IC157).  This course includes didactic, laboratory, and clinical application of cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilization of dental office equipment and instruments.  This course, is generally offered on Fridays, and is on a space limited basis.  

Prerequisite: BLS Certification AHA or ARC, ask us about BLS requirements. 

STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:

• Must provide a copy of current CPR BLS certification (AHA or ARC), 2-hour Dental Practice Act certification.
• Students are asked to wear scrubs and not wear open-toed footwear. 

COURSE REQUIRMENTS:

• Complete all precourse work prior to the start of the course.
• Complete all competencies of the course with passing scores. 
• Pass a written exam (above 70%).

The following Business and Professions Code Sections require certain individuals to complete a Board-approved course in infection control (among other requirements): 

1. 1750: The employer of a dental assistant shall be responsible for ensuring that a dental assistant who has been in continuous employment for 120 days or more has already successfully completed, or successfully completes, a board-approved course in infection control within a year of the date of employment.
2. 1750.2: On and after January 1, 2010, the board may issue an orthodontic assistant permit to a person who provides evidence of successful completion of a board-approved course in infection control.
3. 1750.4: On and after January 1, 2010, the board may issue a dental sedation assistant permit to a person who provides evidence of successful completion of a board-approved course in infection control.
4. 1752.1: Individuals applying for registered dental assistant licensure on or after January 1, 2010, shall provide written evidence of successful completion within five years prior to application of a board-approved course in infection control. 

All course requirements for didactic, lab, and clinical instruction, including the requirements for human patients are consistent with the California Dental Board regulations and must be fulfilled in order to achieve a completion certificate.
