Coronal Polish

Additional Information

 This course is designed to meet the standards of the California Dental Board, for the instruction and application in coronal polishing.  Provider number CP122.  This includes 12 hours of didactic, laboratory, and clinical application of coronal polishing. This combination class, is generally offered on Fridays, and is on a limited space basis. 


This course is required for the unlicensed dental assistant seeking to become an RDA.  ONLY an RDA can perform a coronal polish, however, certification must be completed prior to taking the RDA Board exam to obtain an RDA license.


Prerequisites: BLS Certification AHA or ARC, 8-hour Infection Control Certification, and Dental Practice Act Certification.


STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must provide a copy of current CPR BLS certification (AHA or ARC), 8-hour Infection Control Certification, and Dental Practice Act Certification.
  • Must be currently employed in a dental office – please call before you register for this course if you do not work in an office or have access to an office. 
  • Student must have knowledge of the dentition. (jaws, teeth, universal numbering system)
  • Students are asked to wear scrubs and not wear open-toed footwear.


 COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Complete all precourse work prior to the start of the course.
  • Perform and complete two (2) coronal polishes on a manikin.
  • Must pass a written exam (above 70%) prior to coronal polishes on human patients.
  • Perform a coronal polish to three (3) human patients according to the specified criteria  under the supervision and verification of a licensed dentist. 
  • Each clinical patient shall possess a minimum of 24 natural teeth with no braces.
  • Must complete all the necessary forms and turn in all required documentation before granted completion certificate.

 

Students will be required to bring their own PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for use during the lab and clinical portions of the course.

  • Protective eyewear
  • Lab coat or disposable gown 

 

Again, there is an outside segment of the course to be completed at your office or clinic where each student is required to perform coronal polish on three (3) human patients according to the specified criteria  under the supervision and verification of a licensed dentist.  Please call before you register for this course if you do not work in an office or have access to an office. There is an extra charge to use our facility and that we do not provide the patients.


PATIENT REQUIRMENTS:

Must be at least 18 years or older. 

Patient may be under the age of 18 provided a parent or guardian provides consent and documents consistent with the course.

Patient must be in good medical and oral health (a medical history form will be completed prior to treatment).


Enrolled students will have one (1) week to complete the clinical portion of the course within their own dental office or clinic. 


All course requirements for didactic, lab, and clinical instruction, including the requirements for human patients are consistent with the California Dental Board regulations and must be fulfilled in order to achieve a completion certificate.
